PROTECTED SPECIES

Bats

All eighteen species of bat present in the UK are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017.

At Ecology Solutions, we offer a complete bat survey and mitigation service to enable your project to proceed in full compliance with legislation and with minimum disruption to construction schedules.  We offer detailed surveys of buildings and activity surveys of development sites, as well as in-canopy inspections of trees.  Calling on the latest in acoustic recording technology and trapping techniques, we are able to bring our skills to bear on any given proposal, including large scale development and wind turbine sites, through to smaller scale barn and loft conversions.

If the presence of bats is established on a site, mitigation plans and/or a bat licence may be required before development can proceed. Our ecologists are able to propose thorough and effective strategies adapted to the specific characteristics, objectives and limitations of each project, both for projects requiring licences and for those where the presence of bats is not discovered but the site is deemed a suitable habitat for the species.

Both our Hertfordshire and Worcestershire branches benefit from the expertise of Natural England licensed bat ecologists who have extensive experience in European Protected Species licence applications and their implementation.

The active survey season for bats typically runs from April to October, though building and tree inspections can be carried out outside of this time; surveys for winter roosts are undertaken from November to March.
